interactive sculpture, installation
wood, plastic
Flat and disparate 2-D shapes come together to share new forms and geometries. Participants can play with arrangements of translucent square tiles that have colored polygons on them. No shapes intersect on each tile. The intersections are only revealed when individual tiles overlap to form a larger composition in shared space.
The core sculptural component is meant to be freely taken apart and put back together. It is held together by dowels that connect the top and bottom pieces of the wooden base and by slots in the wooden base that connect to the tiles. There are instructional phrases on several tiles, a hint to participants for how to engage with the work. There are no set rules; only suggested constructs that can be followed, adapted, or discarded.
This installation can be experienced as a solo free-form exploration of shape, color, and form. When experienced with others in a group setting, it also becomes a physical dialogue and a representation of the concept of collaboration -- bringing about something greater than the sum of its parts.
